Veteran's Administration Nursing Home

This 50,000 sq. ft. facility, designed in California Mission style, is an addition to an exiting Veterans Administration Hospital in eastern Alameda County, some 30 miles from San Francisco. The facility has been designed to take full advantage of its semi-rural setting, overlooking an adjoining country club and golf course. Residents have good views of the surrounding countryside, and the building affords them many opportunities to use the outdoors as the setting for their activities. Both terraced dining and a rooftop solarium have been provided, and the landscape and building design help reinforce a strong indoor/outdoor connection.

The facility’s 120 beds are arranged in a mix of singles, doubles and 4-bed rooms. The building also includes rooms for physical and occupational therapy, for treatment, for staff, and—for the convenience of residents—an open kitchen that anyone can use. The facility is fully accessible for disabled persons, and has been designed to emphasize passive energy conservation through orientation, shading and other building features. Solar panels on the roof provide hot water heating.
